The data on oil consumption in the BBC presentation implies that glasshouse growers are not embracing new renewable technology. Many in the northern hemisphere are using CHP engines to burn fossil fuels more efficently in glasshouses built with high thermal performance glass. A signiifcant number are using biogas instead of fossil fuels or biomass plus ground source heat pumps and other integrated technology to move their operations off grid and off fossil fuels. These operators are virtually eliminating their demand for oil or oil equivalents while also providing local employment and local economic value in supplying fresher food with fewer food miles.
