Leaking gutters

With the typical summer weather affecting much of the country it is a time to realise what terrible guttering we have in the UK. Almost every other European country has solid metal guttering and downpipes, but in the Uk we seem obsessed with plastic ones. These are notorious for leaking due to expansion and contraction, UV degradation and accidental damage. These are all factors that are not really known in Europe because they do not use this cheap and not very cheerful material. So if you are suffering from issues like damp from leaking guttering, constantly having to empty blocked ones etc why not replace with some wider and more solid ones. Lindab are a well known brand that are available from the Eco Home Centre in Cardiff. See http://www.EcoHomeCentre.co.uk and click onto the shop area. "Simply" replacing plastic with metal gutters is not necessarily going to show any improvement. Neither is it likely to be simple ! I have done a bit of this work - on the wonderful galvanized-steel gutters referred-to - and much of the problem is to organize the gutter dead level, or very slightly inclined. This involves adjusting several of the supports, often up at a height. Not a greatly enjoyable game, in metal or plastic !

No guttering that is dead level is going to work very well but I do believe the better materials such as galvanised steel and copper are better longer term solutions, and in respect of copper will probably only need to be done once per 5 generations! SO that means 4 times less levelling...
