Frankly, I'm disappointed in The Times. It seems that they failed to check their figures with Google before publishing the story. Not only is that poor reporting - it's a cynical attempt to gain traffic and therefore revenue by exploiting the carbon issue.

Not only does this serve to misinform - not everyone will read the Google response - but it makes people tired of the carbon footprint issue.

Personally, I'd like to know what the carbon footprint of this whole ridiculous-waste-of-time story is. The one positive in the story's favour is that it helps spread awareness of the carbon impact of almost everything we do.
