East Anglia consultation kicks off

The joint-venture developers of the East Anglia offshore wind farm zone, Scottish Power Renewables and Vattenfall, have launched a community consultation to hear stakeholder views on the proposed development.

The two companies have been awarded development rights to Zone 5, which is being called the East Anglia Zone. The companies bagged the right to develop the East Anglia zone in January last year from The Crown Estate following its third licensing round for offshore wind. The 50-50 joint venture hopes to develop, build and operate up to 7.2GW of wind capacity in the 6,000 km square zone.

The East Anglia Zone is located off the coast of East Anglia. At the closest point the Zone is 14km from shore. The project will be built in six phases with the first being called East Anglia One and will have a capacity of up to 1.2GW. The Statement of Community Consultation explains how the development team will keep interested parties informed about the project and how people can comment on the proposals and shape the application. According to the two entities, before submitting a planning application to the Bristol-based Infrastructure Planning Commission it will be necessary to fully investigate the site in preparation of a full environmental assessment as part of a wider planning submission which also includes an analysis of how the zone is used by other people and interests.

This will take East Anglia Offshore Wind to 2012 whereupon the first submission will be made. The IPC has indicated it will require up to nine months to complete its decision making process for each wind farm application. Construction dates will depend on the timing of consents. The first offshore construction is expected to commence in approximately 2015.
