National Express annouce a 43% reduction in Energy Consumption
National Express recently announced a 43% reduction in Energy Consumption at their 9 West Midlands Bus Depot.
After fitting heating control technology from sustainable engineering firm Vickers Energy, the Bus Division has reduced its energy consumption by almost 9.3 million kWh (43%) at 9 bus depots in the West Midlands, reducing CO2 emissions by 1716 tonnes per annum.
The work at the 9 West Midlands Bus Depots was coordinated by Mick Mullins who managed the project from the National Express Property & Environment team. “Early in 2010 we recognised that Energy Management Systems (EMS) could have a significant impact not only on our emissions performance but also on our operational efficiency – helping to reduce energy costs at a time of rising utility prices. The Vickers programme at our West Midland Depots has confirmed that delivering an average reduction of 40% is achievable”. The EMS system was installed at Wolverhamption, West Bromwich, Coventry, Pensnett, Acocks Green, Perry Barr, Birmingham Central, Yardley Wood and Walsall.
The energy management system (EMS) monitors and regulates temperature throughout a bus depot without the need for manual intervention. Through a single centralised control unit it regulates the heating across different temperature zones to the nearest kilowatt hour, without the need for different systems, clock settings or equipment. Highly accurate digital sensors are positioned throughout the depots and calibrated to ensure 0.1 degree accuracy. The system is self-learning and uses predictive tools to constantly adapt heat settings to maintain the required temperatures in every zone of your building. It automatically factors in unpredictable issues such as the weather, open doors, manual errors, machinery malfunctions and more. Manual intervention is a thing of the past.
