York welcomes eco-friendly survey results
York is among the top 20 towns and cities for its efforts to be environmentally friendly, according to a poll.
Ranked 18 out of 324 in the unnamed poll, which was cited by The York Press, the North Yorkshire city has more eco services per head than the vast majority of others in the UK.
Places were judged on residents' access to services such as recycling centres, insulation and conservation experts and asbestos removal firms, as well as organic and arm foods and a green councillor.
One of each criteria service was available per every 4,091 York residents; Norwich scooped first place on the list with 1,736 and Kilmarnock came in last with 19,692.
Green councillor Andy D'Agorne told the newspaper: "Being green is one of the aspects that makes York so attractive to residents and tourists."
The City of York council has constructed its new Neighbourhood Services Directorate "EcoDepot" out of timber and walls made from straw bales and is energy and water efficient.
