World's largest offshore windfarm opened in UK

World's largest offshore windfarm opened in UK
The world's largest offshore windfarm has been opened by Vattenfall off the coast of the UK.

Thanet offshore windfarm has the potential to generate 300MW of energy from its 100 turbines off the south coast of Kent, which is enough to power more than 200,000 homes.

The opening of the project takes the UK's total capacity from both onshore and offshore wind turbines to 5GW, which is enough to power all the homes in Scotland, according to the Press Association.

Secretary of state for energy and climate change Chris Huhne is attending the opening of the windfarm.

Mr Huhne said that it is essential that, as an island nation, the UK fully harnesses its "wave, wind and tidal resources".

"I know that there is still more to do to bring forward the large sums of investment we want to see in low carbon energy in the UK, and we as a government are committed to playing our part," he added.

Vattenfall currently provides 25 percent of the world's wind power through eight offshore windfarms located in the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800078846-ADNFCR
