World's largest electric taxi pilot 'a success'

World's largest electric taxi pilot 'a success'
Results from the world's largest electrical taxi trial have been released, showing significant CO2 savings.

The Pengcheng Electric Taxi Company, based in Shenzhen, has been using 50 taxis provided by Chinese company BYD since April 2010 and the fleet has now travelled 2.77 million kilometres.

Each e6 vehicle has a range of up to 300 km and saves on average $1,167 (£705) per month in fuel, if it travels 400km per day, as well as saving 60.4 kg of CO2 emissions per vehicle each day.

Stella Li, senior vice-president of BYD, said: "This fleet of 50 e6 taxis has survived the very harsh operating conditions of hot Shenzhen summers and a very cold winter this year, and drivers and passengers alike have been extremely satisfied with their ride experience."

The test results also showed no noticeable loss of range or drop in battery performance throughout the pilot, which saw the vehicles continuously undertake rapid charging of 20 to 30 minutes.

BYD announced earlier in the year it is looking to launch its electric vehicles in Europe by the fourth quarter of 2012.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800516987-ADNFCR
