Wind power yield tool launched
The Carbon Trust has launched an online tool to help households and businesses assess the efficiency of installing a small scale wind turbine on their property.
Using a post code and wind turbine type and size, the wind yield estimator, calculates likely wind speed, generation capacity and carbon savings.
It uses data from 220 weather stations over the last 30 years. Unlike previous wind speed modelling systems however, it takes local land use information into account.
According to the Carbon Trust this makes it a more accurate and useful took, particularly in the urban setting where recent tests suggested wind turbines were of widely varying utility.
Alex Murley, small-systems manager at the British Wind Energy Association said: "The new Carbon Trust wind yield estimation tool will provide significant support to thousands of UK businesses and households seeking to understand whether small wind systems will work for them.
"If sited correctly, small wind systems can generate considerable amounts of clean, green energy helping to reduce electricity bills and carbon emissions."
Meanwhile, the Renewable Energy Association has called on government to provide a £635 million stimulus to the UK renewables sector so it can keep up with the industries of other countries.http://www.carbontrust.co.uk/windpowerestimator/
