Wave and tidal projects granted £2.5m investment
Government investment totalling more than £2.5 million has been awarded to three wave and tidal power projects.

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) granted the funds to research and development projects "supporting and underpinning the deployment of pre-commercial, full-scale devices installed and operating in the sea".

Once funding from other sources has been taken into account, total investment in the three research initiatives reaches £9 million. The grants from the TSB follow investment of £7 million in similar projects last July.

Bauer's project focuses on the development of new underwater drilling technology, which should reduce the cost of installing tidal energy devices.

Pelamis is set to test two P2 machines in an array to demonstrate factors such as energy yield and reliability for the first time, while Marine Current Turbine will look at the impact of such developments on the marine environment.

Iain Gray, chief executive of the Board, said: "The UK is well placed to exploit wave and tidal stream energy resources and this kind of technology will be an important part of the renewable energy mix needed in the future."

Late last year TSB also announced that funding worth £9 million is to be made available for the development of low carbon vehicle technology, with researchers being invited to apply for grants from March 7th.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800374270-ADNFCR
