UN proposes "methane tax"

UN proposes
The United Nations (UN) has proposed a tax on methane, in its report on global farming practices.

According to figures from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, livestock produce 18 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions.

Its proposals to reduce and mitigate the amount of emissions include the removal of subsidies that indirectly cause environmental damage, the use of waste, a tax on methane and fees on natural resource use.

The social and economic importance of livestock rearing is underestimated, meaning that its contribution to climate change has to be tackled in order for the sector to continue to provide a livelihood and 'safety net' to some of the world's poorest people , according to the study.

However, the report said that the environmental damage could be reduced through changes in existing practices and the use of advanced technology to breed and rear livestock.

The report highlighted how globally, farming practices with livestock would have to be more resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Key drivers for change would be population growth, increasing demand for livestock products in the emerging economies, and accelerated rates of urbanisation changing eating habits.

It smells of the 'fart tax' the government tried to implement here in New Zealand. The farmers would not have a bar/baa of it and it failed to go through. No wonder with comments from our country cousins suggesting they might want to tax their wives too.

If people are prepared to pay more for food or go without then this would work. Everybody needs to eat.
