UN chief warns of 'crunch time' for cutting carbon emissions

UN chief warns of 'crunch time' for cutting carbon emissions
The secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, has called on developed nations to take the lead in reducing carbon emissions, while offering incentives to developing countries to allow them to curb their own contribution to climate change.

Speaking at the UN Climate Change Conference in Bali, Mr Ban warned that urgent action was necessary to tackle climate change, emphasising the need for the nations meeting at the conference to agree on a new road map to produce a successor to the Kyoto Protocol which expires in 2012.

He highlighted the potential consequences of inaction, claiming that climate change could result in drought, famine and rising sea levels.

"Climate change is the defining challenge of our age. The science is clear; climate change is happening, the impact is real. The time to act is now," Mr Ban said.

"Together, we can spur a new era of green economics, an era of truly sustainable development based on clean technology and a low-emission technology," he added.

Several nations at the conference have advocated the introduction of a commitment to ensure developed nations reduce their carbon emissions by between 25 and 40 per cent of their 1990 levels before 2020.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18391752-ADNFCR
