UK wasting millions by not recycling

UK wasting millions by not recycling
The UK is losing out on more than £650 million by throwing away rubbish rather than increasing recycling, a new report has claimed.

Research from Friends of the Earth (FoE) found that carbon emissions and imports from abroad would be decreased significantly if recycling was focused upon.

The environmental group explained in its 'Gone to waste: The valuable resources that European countries bury and burn' study that approximately 24 million tonnes of recyclable goods is being incinerated or sent to landfill.

Dr Michael Warhurst, senior waste campaigner at FoE, admitted that recycling rates have improved but urged for more action on the issue.

He said: "Our low recycling rate means that we have to import more expensive resources like aluminium - this is economic madness when they could be recycled here and sold for profit instead.

"It's time we recognised the real value of the materials we throw away every day. We only have one Earth and its resources are finite - making better use of them would save money and help tackle climate change."

Flanders in Belgium was singled out as recycling twice as much as the UK percentage-wise.
