UK to share CCS technology with China

UK to share CCS technology with China
The UK will share and develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology with China and other economically developing nations, Ed Miliband has said.

Speaking at the campus of Peking Universty, the energy and climate change minister called on China to help lead global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

He explained that nations must come together and reach a global agreement this December, when the UN will be holding its annual climate change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

"We're approaching this from the mindset where we can co-operate more with China on things like carbon capture and storage," said Mr Miliband.

"Eventually we hope to see this technology across the world because coal is something that is used in many countries and the key to that is making it a clean fuel of the future."

He also expressed the belief that rich countries have a "moral responsibility and a historic obligation" to promote a low-carbon economy to the rest of the world.

The move could help the UK to meet its Kyoto protocol requirement to share low-carbon technology with developing countries.

However, the Guardian reported recently on fears that giving away carbon offsetting and mitigation technology for free could seriously undermine the business potential that it offers the British economy.
