UK needs higher carbon reduction targets

UK needs higher carbon reduction targets
Higher carbon reduction targets are needed in the UK, scientists have suggested.

A report from the Tyndall Centre has revealed that instead of cutting emissions by the 34 percent recommended by the Committee on Climate Change, the government should look to reduce the output of greenhouse gases by 42 percent at the very least.

Commissioned by Friends of the Earth, the study also calls on the government to achieve this target by focusing on domestic carbon reduction schemes, rather than purchasing offsets from other countries.

Friends of the Earth executive director Andy Atkins said that by setting such goals, the UK would retain its position as a leading voice in the battle against climate change.

"This will show strong international leadership by example ahead of crucial UN climate talks in Copenhagen later this year, and help ensure the UK reaps the huge financial and employment benefits of going green," he explained.

Professor Kevin Anderson from the Tyndall Centre added that the country "must aggressively pursue emission pathways in line with its two degrees commitment".

"This means agreeing to cut UK emissions by at least 42 percent by 2020, and refusing to resort to either buying emissions from overseas or relying on the EU's emission trading scheme as a means of exceeding its emission budget," he said.
