UK must concentrate efforts on offshore wind
The UK must dramatically increase its offshore wind capacity if it is to derive 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020, it has been suggested.

According to the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), Britain will be able to reach this legally required target and create up to 70,000 new long-term jobs only if it offers the industry greater support.

In a new report, the think tank suggested that the UK has the greatest offshore wind potential of any country in the world, but must do more if it is to reap the benefits.

There may be ambitious plans in place for the future, but currently only 700 people are employed in the sector in Britain.

Matthew Lockwood, senior research fellow at the IPPR, warned that the UK is at risk of "being blown off course" on the topic of offshore wind.

Despite government pledges to achieve the targets by 2020, he said: "We need to follow through with concrete policies to create greater certainty for industry, maximise the potential for the UK economy and realise our environmental goals."

Responding to the report, the Renewable Energy Association warned that more targeted support must be provided for the renewables sector in next week's budget.

Philip Wolfe, director general of the body, said: "The IPPR report illustrates exactly why, in the midst of recession, targeting measures at the renewables industry makes economic, as well as environmental sense."
