UK 'must capitalise on skills base for low-carbon sector'
The low-carbon energy industry will be worth $3 trillion (£1.97 trillion) per year, according to the chairman of UK Energy Excellence Samir Birkho.

Speaking at London Oil Week, Mr Birkho urged UK energy companies which already have a strong skills base to make the most of the opportunities opening up in the growing industry.

He said: "While the UK has proven expertise in many aspects of the energy industry, for example drilling and production, up until now it has been slow to invest in new technology development.

"As we look to accelerate the development and deployment of clean and sustainable energy and cost effective low-carbon technology, it is vital that we make the innovation process quicker and far more effective."

Skills from the existing industry could translate into the developing low-carbon sector and, while the UK has the human capital to meet new needs, it "cannot afford to allow a skills gap to emerge", he added.

According to UK Trade & Investment, energy companies currently generate £90 billion from domestic and overseas business and employ 600,000 staff.

UKTI expects that by 2030, the revenues will rise to £200 billion while the industry will employ one million workers.
