UK homeowners given chance to cash in on domestic power generation
Homeowners could earn money by generating their own renewable electricity and selling it back to the grid, the government's Low Carbon Transition Plan has revealed.

Approximately 15 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions reduction required in the UK is to come from domestic properties, where it is estimated that massive energy-efficiency savings can be made.

On top of these savings, the Clean Energy Cash-Back scheme is expected to be in place by next April and will allow both individuals and businesses to save money on their bills by selling back excess renewable energy they have generated.

Once this scheme is up and running, it is likely that the government will introduce a similar strategy for renewable heat production by April 2011.

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband said: "The UK was the first country in the world to legislate for carbon budgets. It was a dramatic change in approach.

"Renewables, nuclear and clean fossil fuels are the trinity of low carbon and the future of energy in Britain. Under our plans we will get 40 percent of our electricity from low-carbon energy by 2020 and more in the years afterwards."

British Eco-Energy, which offers guidance to individuals on domestic renewable energy schemes, welcomed the government's plans to allow homeowners to make money from power generation.
