UK homeowner ordered to switch off wind turbine

UK homeowner ordered to switch off wind turbine
Renewable wind power represents one of the most promising opportunities for the creation of a low-carbon economy, but it could be some time before it is used by consumers on a mass level.

That is the conclusion to be drawn after one homeowner was ordered to turn off his £20,000 turbine following noise complaints from neighbours.

Stephen Munday obtained planning permission to erect the 40ft turbine on his land two years ago.

It generates 5KW of electricity a day, enough to boil 300 kettles, and caters for the majority of his family's energy requirements.

However, the 55-year-old electrician was issued a Noise Abatement Order by his council and threatened with a £5,000 fine if he didn't deactivate the device after his neighbours complained about the high-pitched noise produced by the turbine.

"I am very disappointed," he said. "We were trying to cut down on our electricity bills and help the environment but have been clobbered for doing so.

"Everyone is encouraged to be environmentally-friendly and we wanted to do our bit."

According to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, typical domestic wind systems provide between 2.5KW and 6KW, depending upon the location and size.

It estimated that systems can last for up to 22.5 years, but added that they will need to be serviced every few years to ensure optimal efficiency.

No mention is made of the turbine type used.. Cheap 2 blade turbines, typically from China, mahe a helluva racket as the bladed tip speed is very high.

Smaller diameter multi bladed turbines have a far lower noise output.

Another thing to consider is that resonance down the tower or support structure can emit a higher noise than the turbine at different rotation speeds.
