UK has great wind potential, BEE claims
The UK enjoys some of the best air currents in Europe and windfarms have the potential to provide the nation with significant levels of viable renewable energy.

That is according to British Eco Energy (BEE), an organisation that offers advice and guidance to homeowners interested in implementing renewable energy initiatives including turbines.

Helena Wright, a renewable energy advisor for the group, suggested that wind speeds in the UK are higher than most other European countries.

"We do actually have the potential to lead the way with regards to wind," she said.

"Although we are behind in renewable energy overall, wind could really be our strong point."

The BEE's comments came after several new wind power sites capable of providing 25GW of new electricity capacity were approved by the government.

Announcing the new developments last week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said that offshore wind has the potential to create 70,000 new jobs and contribute £8 billion per annum to the UK economy.

It also suggested that offshore wind could meet over a quarter of the UK's electricity demand.
