UK government details plans for low carbon economy
The UK government intends to build a low-carbon economy as part of its newly-published five-point plan for tackling climate change.
A programme of action, led by the environment (Defra) and energy (DECC) departments, will see the UK pursuing a range of initiatives to reduce carbon emissions at home and abroad.
In mid-July, the government intends to publish a white paper detailing the steps necessary for the UK to meet its emissions reduction commitments of 34 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.
The announcement followed the publication of Defra's UK Climate Projections on June 18th, which will be used to plan for future responses to the changing climate.
All departments will be producing Adaptation Plans by 2010 outlining how climate risk could effect decision making on issues such as house building, waste management and farming.
The government also renewed its calls for homeowners and commercial enterprises to take a larger role in tackling climate change by reducing their own emissions.
Meanwhile, DECC will be working to produce a report this month entitled 'The Road to Copenhagen' that will detail the government's plans for UN climate change talks, which are set to take place in the Danish city this November.
