UK 'could be powered by renewables by 2030'
The UK could be powered entirely by renewable energy sources by the year 2030, according to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT).
Calling for the government to set more ambitious renewable energy targets, Alex Randall, spokesman for the centre, said it is "disappointing" the government is even "struggling" to meet its aim of generating ten percent of power from renewables by 2010.
"Renewable energy targets could and should be more ambitious. Our research shows that the UK could be powered entirely by renewables by 2030," he said.
Mr Randall also spoke of the "moral imperative" the UK has to fight climate change as it is the least developed countries who have contributed the least to carbon emissions that are most effective.
The comments come following a publication of a report by the Committee of Public Accounts, which described progress towards renewable energy targets in the UK as being "unacceptably slow".
Margaret Hodge MP, chair of the committee, highlighted that £180 million of funding for renewable technologies has so far been unspent.
