UK-GBC creates new taskforce for commercial buildings

UK-GBC creates new taskforce for commercial buildings
A new taskforce has been created by the UK-Green Building Council (UK-GBC) designed to improve the eco-credentials of existing non-domestic buildings.

Paul King, chief executive of the body, explained that currently the regulations surrounding commercial properties are too complex, particularly following changes which were announced in October's Comprehensive Spending Review.

The taskforce comprises 30 members of the UK-GBC, sponsored by British Land and Cundall, and is set to make recommendations to the government in March on how the system of Display Energy Certificates and the Carbon Reduction Commitment can be improved.

"We think government could simplify regulations to both reduce the burden on business and achieve greater carbon reductions, cost effectively," Mr King said.

Justin Snoxall, head of business group at British Land, went on to say further collaboration between building owners, management and occupiers to improve the sustainability of properties, which is already taking place within the industry, must be enshrined in regulations.

Non-domestic buildings are thought to account for 17 percent of the UK's carbon emissions.

Under plans announced by housing minister Grant Shapps late last year all new commercial buildings will be zero carbon from the year 2019. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800362353-ADNFCR
