TUI outlines plan to green operations

TUI outlines plan to green operations
Holiday company TUI has announced plans to green its operations by cutting CO2 emissions and reducing the amount of paper it uses.

Among the 20 commitments laid out by the firm, which operates as Thomson and First Choice, is a pledge to reduce the number of pages within its brochure by ten percent in the next three years, which will equate to 380 million fewer pages.

Investments in energy efficiency and clean energy projects within destination countries are expected to save one million tonnes of CO2, while TUI will also work with suppliers to reduce the emissions from distributing brochures.

The company is also looking to reduce CO2 emissions from TUI Travel airlines by six percent between 2008 and 2014 and claims it is also researching the use of more sustainable fuels on its aircraft.

It's estimated by the government that unless steps are taken to cut emissions from the aviation industry, it could make up ten percent of the CO2 produced in the UK by 2020.

Speaking at the Economist Sustainable Business Summit, Christian Cull, director of communications for TUI, said: "These are three-year commitments which give us the long term vision and the necessary framework to really drive change. Our hope is that where we lead, others will follow." ADNFCR-1235-ID-800489312-ADNFCR
