Too few UK firms 'factoring in climate risk and opportunities'

Too few UK firms 'factoring in climate risk and opportunities'
Too few UK businesses are realising the opportunities presented by climate change, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

A recent survey by the government department found that less than a quarter of UK firms are currently factoring climate risk and opportunity within their business plans.

This is despite 31 percent claiming to have been effected by extreme weather conditions such as flooding in the past three years.

Speaking at the Met Office's Hadley Centre for climate change research, environment secretary Caroline Spelman said that climate change represents "opportunities and challenges for businesses of all sizes".

"By planning for the adaptation we need now we can ensure that the UK is best placed to meet the challenges of climate change head-on," she added.

Sectors that were identified as possible beneficiaries of climate change included construction and retro-fitting, water management, tourism, transport and food production.

Defra became the latest government department to publish its real-time energy usage online this week as part of the central government's bid to reduce its emissions by ten percent in the next year. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800014647-ADNFCR
