A developer has claimed thousands of the low carbon vehicles will be produced by 2011.

There could be tens of thousands of electric cars on the road in countries such as Denmark and Israel by 2011, according to a developer.

Better Place has predicted that its electric car production scheme with Renault will be up and running on a major scale within the next two years.

There are three models currently being created that can all reduce carbon emissions from transport - a car aimed at the city market, a saloon and a van.

Jens Moberg, chief executive of Better Place Denmark, told the Guardian that monthly subscriptions will be required to drive the cars.

"We expect the production of electric vehicles to be in the tens of thousands per year for the Danish market from 2011," he stated.

"It will be like signing up for a mobile phone contract."

In Copenhagen, owners of electric cars have already been aided by a rule which allows free parking for any people driving these vehicles.

Can anyone tell me the cheapest electric car available on the market?

Yes - I would recommend Scalextric... This is the only electric car that you will be able to drive all day at relatively low cost and without the electricity companies having to build any more power stations.
