Tesco 'discounts energy-saving bulbs'

Tesco 'discounts energy-saving bulbs'
Tesco is hoping to encourage the use of energy-saving lightbulbs across the UK by making them available for one penny each, it emerged today.

The supermarket chain is allowing customers to purchase up to four bulbs at the discounted price in an effort to help UK householders cut their carbon emissions.

It claims it is hoping to reach its target of selling ten million energy-efficient lightbulbs by the end of the year.

"We're right on track to do that and we hope this fantastic offer will help us reach our target in the next couple of weeks," said Tesco greener living category director Andrew Brocklehurst.

Research has found that while traditional 60-watt lightbulbs can emit around 32 grams of carbon for every hour they are left on, the energy-efficient equivalent cuts this figure to seven grams.

According to Tesco, if each of the store's ten million energy efficient bulbs were used to replace ordinary bulbs in the UK for two hours per day, up to 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide could be saved each year.

RedOrbit.com recently claimed that energy-saving bulbs are around 75 per cent more efficient than their incandescent counterparts.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18509116-ADNFCR
