Tech firms 'unengaged with climate change'

Tech firms 'unengaged with climate change'
Technology firms are on the whole showing "little engagement" with issues of climate change and sustainability, according to Greenpeace.

The campaign group published its latest Guide to Greener Electronics, which again saw Nintendo and Microsoft rated the worst among 18 leading electronics firms.

Every three months the green campaign group publishes its rankings, which take into account the hazardous substances in company's products, whether they take back and recycle obsolete products and the extent to which they reduce the climate impacts of operations and products.

The guide adds up each company's scores based on publicly available information on their websites.

According to Greenpeace, although major companies such as Dell, Microsoft, Lenovo, LG, Samsung and Apple are making green claims, they are not taking the necessary steps to tackle climate change.

Only Sharp, Fujitsu Siemens and Philips were found to support necessary carbon emissions cuts of 30 per cent by 2020.

Climate and energy campaigner Mel Francis said: "It is disappointing that such innovative and fast-changing companies are moving so slowly, when they could be turning the regulation we need on global emissions into a golden business opportunity."

The report follows a study by WWF and Gartner of 24 information communication technology companies, which revealed leaders did not have greenhouse gas emission targets and had only "immature" environmental programmes.
