Sustainable tourism 'becoming more popular'

Sustainable tourism 'becoming more popular'
A representative from the Association of British Travel Agents has claimed that sustainable tourism is gaining in popularity.

According to Sean Tipton, the tourism industry is expanding its environmental awareness beyond carbon-friendly airfare to also reduce the impact on tourist destinations.

"The industry is very concerned about the damage it does to the environment for the very simple reason being that if you look at the kind of places customers are sent to, there's a very simple reason they became popular in the first place - they are very beautiful places," he said.

Mr Tipton added that it is "counterproductive" to ruin the destinations people travel great distances to see and stated that there are measures in place to ensure that the tourism industry operates in a carbon-friendly way.

Among the measures in place are schemes where towels are washed on a basis of necessity, rather than daily, as well as the use of local products to minimise environmental damage caused by shipping items from outside sources.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18492710-ADNFCR
