Sustainable economy beyond party politics
The Green Party is calling on politicians and non-government organisations (NGOs) to come together to tackle climate change.
Dr Caroline Lucas has said that joint efforts are needed to ensure the UK economy faces climate change "on a war footing".
Speaking after Dr Chris Field from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) revealed that the effects of climate change could be worse than previously imagined, Dr Lucas said now is the time to "go beyond party politics".
She said: "We can disagree about most things, but on this we all need to get onto the same page, and it needs to be the right page."
"We need to put the UK economy on something like a war footing - nothing less than that will do the job - and we'll have the added advantage that we'll come out of the recession with a more resilient, more stable economy."
Addressing fellow party leaders and NGOs, Dr Lucas added: "Let's meet, agree the right targets, and get the whole country pulling together towards a sustainable economy."
The IPCC's presentation at this weekend's American Science conference in Chicago suggested that rainforests are at risk of moving from "carbon sinks" to "carbon sources". http://www.greenparty.org.uk/news/2009-02-15-climate.html
