Stagecoach launches carbon neutral bus network

Stagecoach launches carbon neutral bus network
The first carbon neutral bus network in Scotland has been launched by Stagecoach, according to Transport Briefing.

The transport group has unveiled a new environmental initiative, which will make its bus network between Edinburgh and Fife carbon neutral for the next five years.

By combining a new tree-planting scheme with the use of biodiesel and low-emission fuel additives, the bus operator plans to ensure this service remains carbon neutral until 2013

The tree-planting scheme will involve around 140,000 trees covering 60 hectares of land. It is thought these trees will help to absorb the 4,300 tonnes of carbon emissions the Fife-Edinburgh operation releases annually.

A broadleaf, conifer and native woodlands mix will be incorporated into the scheme, which is being run in partnership with Global Trees, a Scottish charity.

Global Trees has also recently worked with three university student unions to become carbon neutral, including Edinburgh, Queen Margaret and Heriot-Watt universities.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18574506-ADNFCR
