Smart meters to be installed across the UK

Smart meters to be installed across the UK
All British homes will be equipped with smart meters by 2020 under new plans published by the UK government.

In an attempt to help homeowners more effectively manage their energy use, Britain will become the first country in the world to completely overhaul its metering services for electricity and gas.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change believes that smart meters will enable utilities to read energy usage remotely instead of offering estimates, as well as providing residents with real-time information on their readings.

In addition to saving money on their bills, homeowners will also be able to more effectively identify areas where they can improve their energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

It is also expected that the move will make it easier to switch between suppliers, something that could encourage more people to switch to greener energy providers.

Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary, said: "This is another part of our Great British Refurb.

"The meters most of us have in our homes were designed for a different age, before climate change. Now we need to get smarter with our energy."

It is believed that smart meters will bring about a fundamental change in the UK's energy usage habits; they have been identified as a "key step" towards the establishment of future smart grids that are required for a switch to a low carbon economy.

British Gas, the UK's largest energy supplier, has welcomed the scheme, claiming that every household will be able to reduce its energy use and carbon emissions while saving money as a result of smart meters.

The government is now running a consultation, which will last until July 24th, to provide consumers and businesses with a chance to put forward their thoughts on how the technology should be rolled out.
