Smart meters in 2m UK homes by 2012

Smart meters in 2m UK homes by 2012
British Gas has announced that it will install two million UK homes with smart meters by 2012, leading the way for other energy suppliers to follow.

Mark Todd, director of energyhelpline.com, commented that installing the new meters was a positive step for controlling energy consumption.

"What British Gas is doing is bringing the energy meter into the 21st century," he explained.

According to parent company Centrica, households using the meter will be able to read 'real time' information, be billed automatically by the company without providing a reading and they should be able to cut their energy use, carbon emissions and fuel bills.

Mr Todd claimed that although the announcement was a positive move, it would still be some time before customers' energy consumption would decrease.

"I think customers will feel more informed, I think they'll have more confidence about their bills, but I think it is going to take time."

In December 2009, the Department of Energy and Climate Change claimed that all homes would have the technology by 2020.
