'Smart meters for all homes' Tories agree

'Smart meters for all homes' Tories agree
Smart meters would be included in every home as part of Conservative proposals to create a low carbon economy, party leader David Cameron has said.

Launching his vision for a low carbon Britain, the Tory leader claimed that the party would provide £1 billion in fund the installation of smart meters, which would help create a high-tech electricity grid.

The grid would be part of the Conservative party's platform for the environment, which, like various other organisations, calls for the decarbonisation of the UK as a means to create jobs.

Mr Cameron, interviewed in the Guardian, said that smart grid technology, which allows customers to see how much energy they are using in real time and how much energy costs at different times, was the equivalent of "the internet for electricity".

His proposal accords with moves made by the government already. Last year the government secured Royal Assent for the Energy Act, which states that smart meters will be mandatory for all homes by 2020.

That act also provides for the payment of feed-in-tariffs to buildings with microgeneration technologies, which can have their contribution to the grid measured by the smart meters.

Mr Cameron, who is to launch the Tory environment platform in a webchat, also echoed London mayor Boris Johnson's opposition to a third runway at Heathrow.
