Sheffield to take the Eco Travel Pledge

Sheffield to take the Eco Travel Pledge
Sheffield residents are being urged to cut down on their car use.

The local council has launched an Eco Travel Pledge, which asks people living in the city to give up their car for a minimum of one day a week, the Sheffield Telegraph reports.

Councillor Paul Scriven has launched the Day Without My Car pledge and states that he will leave his car at home for three days a week.

"If we can get 20 per cent of cars in Sheffield off the road for one day a week for the rest of our working lives, that will have a significant impact on climate change and C02 emissions, so you're helping the environment, getting to work quicker and if you walk or cycle you'll be fitter as well," he said.

Elsewhere in the UK, Creamfields festival has teamed up with Liftshare.com to encourage festival-goers to get involved in car share schemes to reduce carbon output.
