Scottish Water to turn waste to energy

Scottish Water to turn waste to energy
A "green waste" recycling facility is to expand to generate renewable electricity through the process of anaerobic digestion.

Scottish Water's facility at Deerdykes already uses garden waste to produce compost but is to accept food waste, which it will process in giant tanks to create a gas which can be burned to generate energy.

Business development manager Donald MacBrayne said: "As part of this process of anaerobic digestion they [bacteria] produce gases which can be harnessed and burned to produce electricity.

"Everything from potato peelings to soggy old tea bags can be transformed into an efficient and environmentally-friendly energy source."

The energy generated from burning the gas will be used to power and heat local industrial estates, with surplus being sold to the National Grid.

In addition, the leftover residue, or digestate, is to be used as a soil conditioner.

Earlier this year, the Environment Agency published a Quality Protocol for anaerobic digestion.

Among the advantages of the protocol, which still has to be approved by the EU, is that digestate can be used on agricultural fields directly without being treated as "waste".
