Scotland launches boiler scrappage scheme

Scotland launches boiler scrappage scheme
The Scottish government has today (May 24th) launched a boiler scrappage scheme, following on from the success of the UK initiative last year.

In total 5,000 boilers will be replaced through the scheme, with households receiving £400 vouchers for the installation off an Energy Saving Trust certified boiler.

It is thought that once completed the scrappage scheme will save the equivalent level of CO2 of taking 2,000 cars off the road.

Energy minister Jim Mather indicated that the scheme would help support numerous jobs, although no specific figures were provided.

The government in Westminster estimated that the much larger UK-wide scheme would sustain work for 125,000 installers and 25 manufacturers.

Carbon reduction levels were believed to be the equivalent of taking 45,000 vehicles off the road.

Under the UK-wide scheme renewable heating systems like biomass boilers and heat pumps were also included, yet there has been no mention of these being covered by the Scottish version.

Only residents that own their home with G-rated models are eligible under the initiative, but given the potential carbon emissions, should this be extended further?ADNFCR-1235-ID-19796023-ADNFCR
