Scotland-to-England dam could generate 300MW of electricity

Scotland-to-England dam could generate 300MW of electricity
A feasibility study has been launched into the potential for construction of a £500 million, mile-long dam between England and Scotland that would generate 300MW of electricity.

The Sunday Herald reports that the proposed barrage would stretch across the River Solway - from Annan in Dumfries & Galloway to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria - and produce power through a series of underwater turbines.

Scottish Enterprise, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Northwest Regional Development Agency launched the £100,000 study into the project, which would also provide a convenient point for road and rail crossings across the Solway.

According to the newspaper, the dam would be able to create as much renewable electricity as a large windfarm.

Allison MacColl, who heads up Scottish Enterprise's industries team for the southern region, told the Sunday Herald that the plans had first been discussed in the 1960s.

She continued: "It could be a substantial contributor to the Scottish renewable energy targets. The study will give us an idea of what technical solution is best and whether there are any showstoppers."

Ms MacColl said that there is strong support for the project, but added that both Westminster and Holyrood governments would need to lend their support to make the dam commercially viable.

Currently, numerous plans for a similar type of power station are being considered for the River Severn, which has been a prime site for barraging since the 19th century.
