Ruthless focus on carbon cutting necessary

Ruthless focus on carbon cutting necessary
Having a "ruthless" focus on emissions will make it possible for companies to reduce their carbon footprint, according to logistics firm DHL.

The global company, which has a fleet of 400 aircraft and thousands of vehicles, has set up a subsidiary – DHL Neutral Services – to cut its emissions.

DHL has set itself a target of reducing its emissions by 30 per cent by 2020 – a challenge Karl Feilder, the subsidiary's chief executive, believes can be met.

He told Business Green that cutting emissions was a matter of "making a lot of small changes".

"By focusing ruthlessly on carbon reduction in all parts of the supply chain we think we can do it," he added.

And, by focusing on cutting emissions, operational costs will also be reduced, he concluded.

Figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs show that road transport accounted for 22 per cent of the UK's emissions in 2006.
