Wave device could support wind turbine

Wave device could support wind turbine
A firm claiming its offshore floating wave power device could support a wind turbine, is seeking funding to develop the technology.

Offshore Wave Energy Limited (OWEL), has devised a floating marine generator that traps and compresses air from wave troughs, which it then uses to power a turbine.

The floating device, which the company claims could be installed with relative ease while causing minimum disruption to the ocean floor, has already been tested in 1/10 and 1/100 scale models.

And, according to OWEL director Chris George, the floating structure could support a wind turbine, adding to its expected 12 megawatt capacity.

He told New Energy Focus: "One of the interesting things about Grampus is something which we are not looking at at the moment. You could actually put wind turbines on the top of it."

Mr George also spoke of the £4 million funding required to develop a commercial scale device.

He claimed if the company received investment the device would be ready in four to five years, in time to help the UK meet its target of generating 15 per cent of electricity from renewables by 2020.

Dear Chris,
Congrats on getting something out of the Carbon Trust. I tried without success several times.

One aspect that needs amplification. If you have a large array of these will you end up sterilising a large amount of sea bed from fishing exploits?
