Retailers pledge to fight climate change

Retailers pledge to fight climate change
A number of UK retailers have signed up to a wide range of pledges designed to tackle climate change, it has emerged.

Argos, Asda, Next, Sainsbury's, Tesco and The Body Shop are among those who have committed to the industry-wide goals, which include pledges to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, cut down on packaging, slashing water use and reducing the amount of waste set to landfill during the next five years.

Other commitments made by the retailers include the development of consistent carbon footprinting of products, improving customer recycling schemes and working to cut the carbon emissions created through vehicles and buildings.

"We recognise we can make a real difference through our own operations and by supporting customers and staff in ways that suit their budgets and lifestyles," said Stephen Robertson, director-general of the British Retail Consortium.

"We serve and lead by providing positive choices and, wherever we can, incentives to do the right thing," he added.

The scheme was announced in the House of Commons this week.ADNFCR-1235-ID-18577071-ADNFCR
