Salmond: Nuclear investment will take away from clean renewable energy
Investment in clean renewable energy would suffer if funds were diverted toward developing nuclear power plants, according to Scottish first minister Alex Salmond.

Replying to questions from MSPs, the first minister said that any investment in nuclear power would be to the detriment of the development of clean renewable alternatives.

"Anything you invest - and it will be billions - in nuclear power is billions taken away from clean technology and in renewable technology," he said.

"We have great prospects in our renewables sector - I think that is a huge priority," he added.

Mr Salmond has been strong in his support for renewable technology, setting a target for Scotland of meeting 20 per cent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020.

However, Lord Adair Turner, chairman of the Committee on Climate Change told the Scotsman that nuclear should not be ruled out.

Last week Magnox Electric, operator of Bradwell nuclear power station, was found guilty of allowing a radioactive material to leak for 14 years.
