Report reveals renewable energy technology potential

Report reveals renewable energy technology potential
A new report has seemingly paved the way for significant renewable energy technology investment.

The UK Government's Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) has concluded that offshore winds could be harnessed to produce an additional 25GW of electricity to the 8GW already planned or being generated.

With this in mind, Ofgem has launched a new offshore cabling licensing scheme, while energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt has given his backing to an industry which could help Britain achieve its target for 15 percent of energy to be produced by renewables by 2020.

"We're already the world's number one offshore wind power," he commented.

"With the right support, we can grow the industry even further, supporting tens of thousands of high value, green manufacturing jobs."

The Department of Energy and Climate Change predicts that offshore wind could provide the UK with a 70,000 jobs boost and increase annual reserves by £8 billion.

Wind farms are used commercially by around 80 countries as part of an effort to reduce their carbon emissions.

Hi,
This comment by Lord Hunt is misleading. Whereas we all know that the output from our wind energy is growing (Germany has less than us!), it provides so little energy (MWhr and MW). However, our total wind energy is lamentably poor in total output, less than it should be and not mongst the best countries.
The comment is too selective to be of any value and it akin to the hype or spin we've too frequently from politicians.
A more accurate report would be "under-performing and must do a lot better".
Best wishes
Terry Keenan
