Renewable electricity to overtake gas

Renewable electricity to overtake gas
Renewable energy will overtake gas as the second largest source of electricity by 2012, according to the International Energy Agency.

The Paris-based agency's World Energy Outlook 2008 claims that only coal will produce more electricity than renewables at the time.

As well as the new renewables such as wind, tidal, wave and biomass, the figure takes into account hydropower.

The milestone will be achieved even if governments are slow to implement legislation to speed the transition to a low-carbon economy.

"Renewables-based electricity generation is expected to grow substantially over the coming decades, benefiting from high fossil-fuel prices, declining investment costs and government support," said the report.

However, the report also notes that on current trends, energy related carbon dioxide emissions will rise by 45 per cent between 2006 and 2030, reaching 41 gigatonnes.

Three quarters of that will come from China, India and the Middle East, claimed the report.

The UK government has committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 and generating 15 per cent of energy from renewables by 2020.

Hi
Testing is to take place before February 2009 of a process unit that could see the end of coal, and nuclear plants for generating power.
Exciting nuclear plants would be able to be modified to be able to use the device, this includes nuclear powered submarines and ships.
No harmful emissions to worry about, ship that have the LM2500 gas turbines would benefit the most from this.
