Prince Charles urges Vogue readers to "upcycle"

Prince Charles urges Vogue readers to
Fashion can play a vital role in helping cut the global carbon footprint, according to Prince Charles.

In an article for US fashion bible Vogue magazine, the Prince said that wearing secondhand or vintage clothes can help protect "scarce resources and avoid waste".

"I believe fashion has a role to play in helping to confront some of the environmental challenges we face," he wrote.

"For this trend is not only about an attraction for retro design and the charm of the old, it is very much about the future."

He added that in Britain "upcycling", taking old clothes and giving them a modern twist, has become extremely popular.

His Royal Highness also urged people to opt for sustainable fabrics such as wool, which has a smaller environmental impact than other materials and is fully recyclable.

"Fashion clearly makes people feel good, but now it has to do the world good, too, by contributing to the creation of a virtuous circle, with nature protected at the centre," he concluded.

Prince Charles is well known for his green efforts and last month it was announced that he will take a five-day tour of England, Scotland and Wales in September to help encourage sustainable living.
