PM highlights need for low carbon deal
The UK prime minister has warned that failure on the part of world leaders to agree a deal for the reduction of carbon emissions could result in "catastrophe".

Gordon Brown was speaking to environment ministers at a meeting in London ahead of climate change talks scheduled to be held in Copenhagen in December.

Addressing the Major Economies Forum with 50 days until 190 nations meet in Denmark, Mr Brown said that if a deal is not made, "no retrospective global agreement, in some future period, can undo that choice".

The prime minister said that 300,000 people are already dying each year from the effects of climate change, a figure that could rise to 500,000 a year within two decades.

Mr Brown urged world leaders to attend the talks in person to make the "momentous choice" to abandon current unsustainable practices and opt instead for a "low carbon, high cooperation future".

He said: "A future too of economic growth - but growth powered by new energy sources and energy efficiency, and bringing with it huge economic opportunities for developed and developing countries alike: new jobs and businesses, new technologies and exports."

Officials said that US president may attend the conference if enough progress has been made over the coming weeks with regard to developing nations' commitment to reducing emissions.

Yet despite these seemingly genuine overtures, when the fact that current (80m high) "Windfarm" take several Hundred years to supply as much energy as is required to replace them - and that a sensible design ( not exactly easy to arrive at !) can do so in 20 years in average sites, and undoubtedly half that on the west coasts of uk, for instance - he allows the "DECC" to continue to make the situation that much worse by "investing" in the same ludicrous farce.
