National Grid includes emissions in performance management
Carbon emissions will be taken into account as part of performance management of National Grid, the firm has announced.
As the company called for greater collaboration between government, industry and consumers, National Grid said it was aiming to reduce its emissions by 45 per cent by 2020.
Head of climate change and corporate responsibility, Joe Kwasnik, said; "We believe National Grid is among the first companies in the world to align company-wide emissions with performance management."
He added that the 45 per cent target "will provide a more relevant milestone for our business planning process and ensure emissions management is integrated into every aspect of our operational decision-making".
The company has taken inventory of its carbon emissions and estimated that for 2009/10 they were about 11.5 million tonnes.
It claimed that it will use carbon price of £26.70 set by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in costing future designs.
Earlier this year, the company said that it was looking into setting up a transmission network for carbon dioxide captured from industrial processes.http://www.nationalgrid.com
