London receives 150 new charging points
London mayor Boris Johnson has opened 150 new charging points in the streets of the capital as part of the Source London project.

The membership scheme is now the largest charging network for electric vehicles in the city and will boast at least 1,300 points by 2013.

Leon Daniels, managing director of surface transport for Transport of London, said the new charging network was intended to give owners of electric cars the confidence to use them in the capital.

"Electric vehicles are no longer just for testing. There are many reasons for Londoners to consider having one of their own," he added.

Source London membership costs £100 a year. Users touch their membership card to the reader then plug their vehicle in.

Plans are also underway for users of Source London to have access to the charging infrastructure being installed in the east of England, which is likely to be branded Source East.

Transport secretary Philip Hammond has previously said this year "could be remembered as the year the electric car took off", thanks to the launch of the Plug-In Car Grant and additions to the network of charging points.  ADNFCR-1235-ID-800559269-ADNFCR

Would it be possible to have an organisation like streetcar purchase a fleet of these electric cars spoken of here, perhaos part funded by the government by subsidised purchase of vehicles and subsidised electricity at the recharging stations.

This would allow affordable zero carbon transport to be available to thousands.

If so this could accelerate the experience and acceptance of using an electric car for not just commuters but londoners too.
