India becomes one of top 5 carbon emissions culprits

India becomes one of top 5 carbon emissions culprits
As far as emerging economies go, India is one of the fastest growing, and new figures show it is also emerging as one of the worst culprits for carbon emissions.

Greenhouse emissions from the Asian country increased 58 per cent between 1994 and 2007, Reuters reports.

This equates to 1.9 billion tonnes per year, which places it in the top five countries in the world for emissions behind nations like the US and China.

According to the news provider, India is in fact catching up with Russia, which releases 2.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases per year.

The drivers behind this increase were said to be the rapid growth within the Indian economy, now the third largest in Asia, and a concerted effort to pull many members of its population out of poverty.

Regardless of the reasons for the increase in carbon emissions, the rise means that India must now form a major part in any international consensus on how to battle climate change.

India agreed to sign the Copenhagen Accord in March, along with China, and the country has also ratified the Kyoto Protocol.

Greenhouse gases from developing nations are measured slightly different to those which are already developed, using a carbon intensity rather than emissions targets, but can economies like India expect to keep growing without continuing to increase their carbon emissions? India is surprisingly forward thinking on Climate Change and is making a real contribution to increasing production of Renewable Energy. We wanted to offset our life time Carbon Emissions and found the only country where you can do that is India where the Government makes planning permission so easy that from first enquiry to purchase and commissioning of a 600KW Wind Turbine took less than 3 months. The IRR is over 15%. They are developing Solar PV again providing sites with planning permission. Details www.mosssolar.com
