Huhne backs higher emissions targets

Huhne backs higher emissions targets
Energy and climate change secretary Chris Huhne has said that he would back an increase in European Union (EU) carbon reduction targets.

Connie Hedegaard, climate commissioner, has come out in favour of upping the target from a 20 percent reduction by 2020 to a 30 percent cut.

Ms Hedegaard said that the initial priority for many member states was to deal with the financial crisis, but talk should begin in the area of creating more ambitious targets.

The comments come following the publication of a report by the European Commission, which concluded that the cost of reaching emissions targets was significantly lower than previously thought.

It is now believed that the cost of a 20 percent cut will be €48 billion (£40.5 billion) by 2020. Original estimates said it could be as high as €70 billion.

Voicing his support for higher targets, Mr Huhne said: "Global climate change is the biggest challenge the world faces and securing an ambitious deal is a priority for this government."

He added that the government will "push for the EU to demonstrate leadership" through raising the target. ADNFCR-1235-ID-19805149-ADNFCR

Is it me or does Huhne in this photo bear more than a passing resemblance to John Cleese?
